On December 21st, 2015, Space X made history by being the first to land an orbital class booster after a successful orbital launch. Soon they will make history again. Space X will be the first private company to send humans. Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will travel past the outer reaches of the stratosphere to their new home for the next few months—the International Space Station.
This launch will mark the return of human spaceflight to American soil. A feat which we haven’t seen in almost a decade. Strapping humans to a Falcon 9 rocket and propelling them into orbit at speeds of 4.76 miles per second isn’t good enough for Space X. They want to look good while doing it.
Beautiful Space Exploration
When Elon Musk was first working on the Crew Dragon SpaceCraft, (the human-rated version of the Dragon One capsule) he stated he not only wanted it to be functional, he wanted it to be beautiful. And it is. Gone are the days of government bureaucrat committees deciding what color this should be, or how many knobs should be there, or what size that should be. No.
Much like the groundbreaking Falcon 9 rocket on which the Crew Dragon sits atop, the production of the capsule is propelled by the vision of one man. From the sleek look of the Crew Dragon, inside and out, to the brand new Space X flight suites, to the astronaut’s arrival to the rocket via Tesla. The “Space X Ninjas” replaced the standard white bunny suits with new all-black Space X clean suits. Everything appears functional, futuristic, and overall—badass. This isn’t your standard space launch. This is a show.
Innovation Unlimited
This is a testament not just to one man’s vision, but the ability of one man to realize his vision. To the only country in the world where a private citizen is able to do such things. To the only economic system in the world that rewards those who innovate and serve the needs of others—in turn sparking more innovation. As Elon Musk has said, “If someone wants to accomplish great things, there is no better place than the U.S.”
