Managing a business, firm, organization, or group of people is not easy. I speak with many Administrators, Owners, and Managers who are looking for the best keys to success. A path to a calm workplace. I have found 3 key principles that have helped me reach success. These 3 principles are the foundation for achieving goals without chaos and frustration. I also have a 4th bonus key principle.
These ideas started many years ago when I was following Marcus Lemonis and listening to his sage advice.
Knowing and following these best keys to success will help you, but the real work is focusing on them without giving up. It does not happen overnight, but if you stay focused you will see a massive shift in a positive direction.
My Dad was a coach. He coached football, basketball, and baseball. It was fun to play all these sports and at the same time spend time with my father. However, the lessons learned were invaluable and stay with me in the good, bad, and ugly I have been through. Coach Lind was masterful at sticking to the basics and pushing us to learn the fundamentals. In baseball, he would often tell us repeatedly, “keep your eye on the ball”, “don’t pull your head”, or “keep your eye on the ball”. Although there are a bunch of techniques for hitting a baseball, this one simple rule is tied to focus. When you’re focused on keeping your eye on the ball and have your chin down—BAM—you would get a great hit. In the same way, with these principles, you need to keep your eye on them, focus, and don’t pull your head and look elsewhere. Dig in, have patience, and stick to the plan.
The Game Plan: The 3 P’S
- PEOPLE: You need the right people behind you, but it’s also important that you consider fit and place people in the right roles that match their skills and talents. Once you’ve built your team, make sure to create an enabling environment where they are supported, and set up for success. You as the leader work for them! Provide an open, transparent workplace.
- PRODUCT: The next element of business success you need to examine is your product. Consider branding, pricing, sizing, packaging, whom you will target, and how you will get your message out there. Remember to view your product as customers will view it and make modifications as needed. This is where most fail—NOT making modifications.
- PROCESS: Without process, everything crumbles, and you will have chaos and frustration. Building a solid process for anything done in your company or Org will lead you to the promised land. This will make the business more efficient, guard against financial problems, and allow you to replicate the model when it’s time to scale.
And, that’s it. Please take the time to incorporate the 3 P’s into your business, firm, or organization.
A Bonus Key Principle
Oh, wait…there is a Bonus. A 4th key principle.
- PASSION: When the going gets tough, the tough embrace their Passion. It is a key element in any business, firm, or organization. Every Damn Day we must get up and get after it. You must love what you do. If that is not the case take steps to change your course. I have been working and guiding Limetree Labs for over 3 years and I can say without hesitation—I LOVE IT! Each day is fun, challenging, continually learning, and striving to be better. I eat it up and love it.
I hope this blog post finds you well in these strange days. Keep grinding and keep smiling.
